FIRST FOUR ATHLETES CONFIRMED FOR THE IAU WORLD 100KM CHAMPIONSHIPS
Four athletes are among the first wave selected to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the IAU World 100km Championships later this year.
The Championships will take place in Bengaluru, India on 7 December 2024, and following the Trial race at the Sri Chinmoy 100km recently, four athletes confirmed their place on the squad.
With the first two eligible British male and female athletes at the British 100k Championships automatically selected, the quartet of Dougie Selman (Corstorphine AAC), James Turner (Allison Benton, Brighton & Hove AC), Sarah Webster (David Leach, Northern (IOM) Athletic Club) and Melissah Gibson (Ealing Eagles Running Club) will pull on the British vest.
Selman was a narrow winner of the men’s race at the Trial, taking the British title by just 10 seconds ahead of Turner after a thrilling contest. Selman’s time came in at 6:34:28 and Turner’s at 6:34:38, and that result saw the pair earn their maiden call-ups to the GB & NI squad.
2023 IAU 50km Championships bronze medallist Sarah Webster won the Trial by a comfortable margin, and she will compete over the 100km distance for GB & NI for the first time.
She will be joined by Melissah Gibson in the women’s race as the Ealing Eagles RC athlete finished second at the Trials to book her place on the team.
Team Leader Walter Hill, said, “We are pleased to have announced the first four athletes heading to India for the World 100km Championships later this year. There were some outstanding performances at the Trials races at Sri Chinmoy last month, and these four athletes have earned their place to take on the world’s best later this year.”
Any further selections to the GB & NI team will be made in the week commencing 22 July 2024.
