“ATHLETES WILL BE EXCITED TO PERFORM,” SAYS WORLD CHAMP JOHNSON-THOMPSON AHEAD OF LONDON

Two-time world heptathlon champion and British record holder Katarina Johnson-Thompson will compete in the long jump at the London Athletics Meet on Saturday 20 July as she continues her preparations for the Olympic Games in Paris.

The 31-year-old, who won a stunning gold at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest last summer, will return to the London Stadium where she jumped a season’s best of 6.60m to finish fifth in the long jump in 2023, her best effort since 2019.

Having been forced to withdraw from the European Championships heptathlon in Rome earlier this month, the Commonwealth Games champion – a multiple world and European pentathlon champion (indoors) – is back in training and looking forward to competing in the much-anticipated Diamond League meeting.

“I love competing in that stadium, the crowd is always amazing and the atmosphere is great, especially for the British athletes,” said the Liverpool Harrier who made her Olympic Games debut at the same venue in London 2012. “It’s obviously coming at a really important time with the Paris Olympics starting the following week, so I’m sure all the athletes will be excited to perform and put on a good show.”

The London Athletics Meet – which will see the return of the world’s best athletes following a record-breaking sell-out in 2023 – is the tenth meeting of the 2024 Wanda Diamond League series. It is the UK’s biggest one-day athletics event and takes place six days before the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, making it the perfect prelude to Paris.

The Wanda Diamond League series comprises 15 meetings in total across four different continents and started with Xiamen (China) on 20 April. It concludes with a single final across two days in Brussels (13-14 September). Each of the 14 series meetings will be broadcast globally in a live two-hour programme.

Tickets to the 2024 London Athletics Meet start from £23 for adults, £5 for juniors and are on track to sell-out in record time. Secure your place to the world’s biggest one day athletics meet HERE.
