2022 STOCKHOLM DIAMOND LEAGUE PREVIEW
Before the Wanda Diamond League series takes a break for the World Athletics Championships next month, Stockholm in Sweden hosts the eighth meeting in the 2022 calendar.
Fresh from booking themselves in the plane to Oregon next month, Olympic medallists Keely Hodgkinson (Trevor Painter, Leigh) and Dina Asher-Smith (John Blackie, Blackheath and Bromley) will compete in the women’s 800m [19:29 BST] and 200m [20:40] respectively in Sweden.
Both have been triumphant on the Diamond League circuit this season, with Hodgkinson winning at three consecutive meetings in Birmingham, Eugene and Oslo. Asher-Smith won the 100m at the Alexander Stadium back in May.
World indoor bronze medallist, Lorraine Ugen (Dwight Phillips, Thames Valley), and two-time Olympic finalist, Jazmin Sawyers (Lance Brauman, City of Stoke) go in the women’s long jump [19:25], while Lawrence Okoye (Zane Duquemin, Croydon) lines up in the men’s discus [19:53].
Reece Prescod (Marvin Rowe, Enfield and Haringey) will continue his strong start to the 2022 outdoor season in the men’s 100m [19:15], while hurdling duo Jessie Knight (Marina Armstrong, Windsor Slough Eton and Hounslow) and Chris McAlister (Marina Armstrong, Thames Valley) will compete in the women’s [19:04] and men’s 400m hurdles [20:28] which are Diamond League events.
Prior to the Diamond League programme getting underway, there are several British athletes taking part in ‘national’ races.
Emsley Carr mile winner, Matt Stonier (Peter Mullervy, Invicta East Kent) competes in the men’s 1500m [18:31], while Ellie Baker (Jon Bigg, Shaftesbury Barnet) goes in the women’s event [18:03]. Ben Pattison (Dave Ragan, Basingstoke and Mid Hants) lines up for the men’s 800m [17:15].
UK champion, Reynold Banigo (Matt Barton, Sale Harriers Manchester) goes in the men’s long jump [17:40], while Ama Pipi (Marco Airale, Enfield and Haringey) is part of the line-up in the women’s 400m [18:48], while UK Championships bronze medallist, Jacob Paul (Marina Armstrong, Windsor Slough Eton and Hounslow) takes on the men’s 400m hurdles [16:50].
The Stockholm Diamond League will be broadcast live on BBC Three between 19:00-21:00 on Thursday 30 June.
