Weekend update
European Clubs U20 Championships, Brno, Czech Republic, 16 September
In this annual season ending meet to crown the best junior club teams in Europe, Shaftesbury Barnet represented the British men as defending champions, whilst Blackheath & Bromley were in action for the women.
The 400m brought a clean sweep of British victories, European Junior 200m champion Maya Bruney (coach: John Blackie) prevailing in the women’s race in 54.22, whilst Matthew Pagan (Stephen Ball) won the men’s in 48.26. Hamza Kadir (Ali Kadir) won the men’s 1500m in a burn up, whilst Isabella Hilditch (Blackie) won the women’s sprint hurdles in 13.83 (0.1m/s).
Daniel Bainbridge (David Parker) was the sole British winner in the field, launching the javelin to a personal best of 62.46m. Rebecca Hawkins (John Bancroft) cleared 1.71m, good for second in the women’s high jump, whilst Sophie Dowson vaulted 3.40m for third in that event. The hammer was also a happy hunting ground for the Brits with Victoria Wiltshire (Michael Davies) and Billy Praim-Singh (Robert Earle) both third, with marks of 47.73m and 62.79m respectively.
Rounding out the day were the relay events, both clubs putting up a strong fight, with Blackheath winning the women’s 4x100m. They backed that up with second in the 4x400m, whilst Shaftesbury were second in the sprint relay and third in the longer event.
Despite those excellent relay results Blackheath had to settle for third in the women’s competition, just six points behind winners Fenerbahce Sports Club, who have now won the event for the last four years. Turkish club Fenerbahce also took the men’s title, with Shaftesbury fifth.
Northern Athletics Road Relay Championships, Sport City, Manchester, 16 September
Leigh Harriers and Lincoln Wellington AC were the day’s winners as the relay season really kicked into action in Manchester. Leigh took the Northern title with an impressive display, a brilliant 19.47 anchor leg by Lauren Haworth (Steve Vernon), the fastest of the day, ensuring they were easy winners.
In the men’s race Lincoln were to the fore throughout, taking the lead at the halfway point and never looking back. It was strength in depth that secured them the title though, with just 19 seconds separated their fastest and slowest runners. Stockport’s Jack Morris was quickest man of the day, running 19.10, 10 seconds faster than Richard Weir of Derby.
