With the UK Athletics Championships getting underway on 8-9 July 2023, we will be taking a look at who is in action, with national titles and places on the plane to Budapest for the World Athletics Championships on the line. Today, we take a look at the throws events.

UK number one Scott Lincoln (coach: Paul Wilson, City of York) will be line for his 16^th UK title (outdoor and indoor) at the 2023 edition. He threw a season best of 21.10m at the European Team Championships recently, so he is in good form heading into the key part of the summer season.

Sarah Omoregie (Brandon Amo, Cardiff) leads the 2023 UK rankings in the women’s shot put following her PB of 17.67m earlier this year. Divine Oladipo (Blackheath & Bromley) and Amelia Strickler (Zane Duquemin, Thames Valley) are joint UK number two so far this year; Strickler won the UK title in 2018.

The men’s discus will see Lawrence Okoye (Zane Duquemin, Croydon) and Nick Percy (Zane Duquemin, Shaftesbury Barnet) go head-to-head. Okoye – a two-time Olympian – leads the rankings, while Percy is defending the title he won in 2022.

Jade Lally (Zane Duquemin, Thames Valley) – eight-time UK champion – will be the favourite for the women’s discus title.

After a stunning personal best earlier in June, Kenneth Ikeji (Paul Head, Basildon) is the clear UK number one in the men’s hammer. The Basildon athlete, who will compete at the European U23 Championships between 13-16 July, threw 77.92m out in Texas. Jake Norris (Paul Dickenson, Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow) is UK number two so far this year. Neither athlete has previously won a UK title.

The women’s hammer will be fascinating with a number of athletes in fine form. Anna Purchase (Notts) and Charlotte Payne (Paul Dickenson, Reading) have both achieved a UKA World Championships selection standard this season with PBs of 73.02m and 72.51m respectively.

After a superb lifetime best of 59.76m at the European Team Championships, Bekah Walton (David Turner, Blackheath & Bromley) will be favourite to retain her UK javelin title in Manchester. U20 athlete Michael Allison (Tom Dobbing, Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow) has already been selected for the European U20 Championships in Jerusalem in August, and the UK number one leads the men’s javelin standings so far this year.

The UK Athletics Championships get underway on Saturday 8 July at 11:30am and run through to 16:50 on Sunday 9 July and will be live on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport app.
