GB&NI TEAM READY TO GO AT EUROPEAN ATHLETICS U18 CHAMPIONSHIPS

This week all eyes will be on Jerusalem as the Israeli capital city plays host to the European Athletics U18 Championships (4-7 July).

41 Great Britain and Norther Ireland stars of tomorrow will be in action over the four-day Championships at the Givat Ram Stadium, starting on Monday (4).

Our girls team will feature heavily in Monday morning’s session as our athletes bid to make their respective finals. The heptathlon gets underway with Chisom Nwafor (Alan Hewson, Chilton) and Seren Rodgers (Steve Shaw, Tauton) completing the 100m hurdles and high jump.

Rachel Clutterbuck (Shireen Higgins, Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow) and Gabriel Phelan (Sarah Kearney, Wirral) will be the first British athletes in action in the first event of the championships – the opening round of the 2000m S/C.

Will Lane (Trevor Fox, Sheffield & Dearne) is the sole male competitor for GB & NI on the opening day as he bids to qualify for Wednesday’s pole vault final.

Our sprint hurdlers will be the first British interest during Monday evening’s session as Daniel Goriola (John Gates, Bexley) and Mia McIntosh (Jake Awe, Harrow) compete in the 110m hurdles and 100m hurdles respectively.

This will be followed by the opening rounds of the 100m as Dejaune Lingard (Ryan Freckleton, Cambridge Harriers), Teddy Wilson (Tamunonengiye-Ofori Ossai, BFT Track Academy), Nia Wedderburn-Goodison (Andre Williams, Harrow) and Renee Regis (Tamunonengiye-Ofori Ossai, BFT Track Academy) will all open their accounts.

In the field, Libby White (David Watson, Ayr Seaforth) competes in the triple jump qualifying rounds whilst Cleo Agyepong (John Hillier, Blackheath & Bromley) and Paige Stevens (Alison Grey, Falkirk) will be hoping to qualify for Tuesday’s shot final.

The session will come to a close with the heptathlon 200m following the shot earlier in the session.

The first opportunity for medals will come during Tuesday evening’s session as the Heptathlon reaches its culmination whilst the field will see finals in the girl’s shot and triple jump.
