UK ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS MEMORIES - MORGAN LAKE: MY FIRST UK CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE
2018 Commonwealth silver medallist, Morgan Lake will be striving for a remarkable seventh straight UK outdoor title at the Müller UK Athletics Championships in Manchester on the weekend of June 24-26.
The high jump specialist – who also has four national indoor titles to her name – has a strong 1.93m season’s best and was recently fifth in the Rabat Diamond League.
Fourth at the 2018 World Indoor Championships and sixth in the 2017 World outdoor Championships in London, Lake looked back on her very first national win:
My first UK outdoor victory…
My first UK outdoor title was in 2016, the year of Rio Olympics. I jumped 1.90m that day, however I already had the Olympic qualifying height of 1.94m, which meant that the win secured my place on the plane to Rio. I won the competition on count-back to the British record holder at the time so it was definitely a battle to get the victory. The weather was good and I always loved competing at Birmingham.
The rest of the season…
That year I was still a heptathlete so the focus for me was to qualify for the heptathlon in Rio, so all my efforts were on that. Luckily, high jump was one of my strong points and an event I really enjoyed so that season I had been pretty consistent over 1.90m and managed to make the Olympic final with a PB jump of 1.94m.
The importance of the Championships…
It’s always so important to me as the majority of the time it’s the trials for a major championship. I always treat it as a vital part of my season and I always want to bring my best at UK champs.
Goals for Manchester…
My goal is to qualify for the World Championships.
