HUDSON-SMITH AMONG THOSE HEADING TO PARIS FOR NEXT STAGE OF THE DIAMOND LEAGUE
Seven British athletes head to the next stage on the Wanda Diamond League circuit in Paris on Saturday 18 June.
The new British men’s 400m record holder, Matthew Hudson-Smith (coach: Gary Evans), takes to the track for the one-lap distance [21:05 BST] at the Stade de Charlety. The Birchfield athlete, who won at the Muller Birmingham Diamond League last month, will line up alongside reigning Olympic champion Steven Gardiner (BAH) in the contest.
Another British record holder, Lizzie Bird (Pat McCurry, Shaftesbury Barnet), will race her second 3000m steeplechase [20:25] of the season. The Olympic finalist, who set the time of 9:19.68 in Tokyo on her way to ninth place, will take on a field which includes Winfried Mutile Yavi (BRN) and Mekides Abebe (ETH) who sit second and third in the 2022 world list.
Daryll Neita (Marco Airale, Cambridge Harriers) has been in excellent form so far in 2022, lowering her season best to 11.09 earlier this week at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland. The Olympic finalist will take on multiple global medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (JAM) in the women’s 100m [21:53] which closes the programme in the French capital.
In the men’s 800m [20:54], Elliot Giles (Jon Bigg, Birchfield) will line up alongside 11 other athletes as he competes in his first Diamond League of the season.
Elsewhere, there will be British representatives in both the men’s and women’s sprint hurdles. Andrew Pozzi (Stratford-upon-Avon) faces the heats of the 110m hurdles earlier in the programme, and if he qualifies through, the final will be at 20:44. Meanwhile, Cindy Sember (Jeff Porter, Woodford Green & Essex Ladies) will race in Europe for the first time this season in the women’s 100m hurdles [21:18].
In the field, Harry Coppell (Scott Simpson, Wigan & District) goes in the men’s pole vault [19:09] with previous Olympic champions Renaud Lavillenie (FRA) and Thiago Braz (BRA) in the line-up.
Live coverage will be on BBC Three between 20:00 and 22:00 on Saturday 18 June.
